What characteristics make a person charismatic? Exuberance, expressive body language, empathy, a passionate voice? Some people are naturally charismatic, but charisma is also a skill you can learn. Charlie Houpert, a shy introvert turned communications consultant and the owner of the biggest charisma channel on YouTube, shares how to build genuine charisma. In this video, he confidently – sometimes perhaps even cockily – presents the five archetypes of charismatic communication and offers three charisma hacks you can use to boost your next conversation.

Summary

Charisma is a skill you can learn. Becoming charismatic requires you to change while also staying true to yourself.

Some people have a natural ability to inspire other people, make them laugh or attract their attention. They are innately charismatic. Yet charisma is also a skill you can learn. Becoming charismatic requires you to change how you present yourself to others, while, at the same time, retaining the essence of your true self. Start by considering the events and influences which have shaped your current personality. Much of your sense of self may be more conditioned than innate. It is possible to stay true to your innate characteristics and work on altering any problematic habits that inhibit your charisma.

People are not infinitely malleable in their charisma levels. Even the best charisma coaches won’t turn Mark Zuckerberg into Will Smith; but they can help people improve their charisma dramatically through small but continuous changes.

Distinguished communicators often fall into one of five charismatic archetypes.
