With tensions among Iran, Israel and Sunni Arab states running high in the Middle East, the focus understandably rests on the region’s two most significant outside players – the United States and Russia. Yet one country that is increasingly asserting its influence on the international stage is India, and its role in Middle Eastern affairs is only gaining in importance. As Hindustan Times editor Pramit Pal Chaudhuri explains, India has been managing the almost impossible task of maintaining relations with three regional actors that are deeply hostile toward each other.

During the leadership of India prime minister Narendra Modi, elected in 2014, India has increased its involvement in the Middle East. Beyond desiring stability in the Persian Gulf, India doesn’t have a grand strategy for the region. Instead, the country has kept its involvement low-key and limited in scope by concentrating on expanding bilateral ties with three significant states: the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Israel and Iran.
