Recommendation

Despite what Marvel Comics will tell you, superheroes have had their day. In an analysis of future leadership development trends, Nick Petrie, a senior faculty member with the Center for Creative Leadership, asks, “What will the future of leadership development look like?” After interviewing 30 experts, Petrie concludes that the era of the “heroic leader” is giving way to “collective leadership” and that leaders need to retake control of their own development within the collective context. getAbstract recommends this white paper to business leaders and human resource managers searching for ways to kick-start development processes.

Take-Aways

  • Business leaders today face an uptick in the “complexity of challenge.” Four trends are coming down the pipeline:
  • With “more focus on vertical development,” leaders must learn to challenge the status quo and find new ways of doing things.
  • The “transfer of greater developmental ownership to the individual” means that leaders must take back control over their own development.

Vertical development need not be a stagnation of individual development and I see this as a wonderful opportunity to expand one’s horizon
