China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission barred single women’s access to assisted reproductive technology (ART) in 2003. When the one-child policy ended in 2015, many people believed the government would ease up ART regulations as well. Instead, the Ministry of Health repeated that, to be eligible for egg freezing, a woman had to present valid identification, a marriage certificate and a government issued birth permit.
