Should I stay or should I go? It’s tempting to let yourself be swept away by the current wave of resignations and quit your job. Not so fast, freelance journalist Elle Hunt cautions in The Guardian. Hunt lists 17 questions to ask yourself before making a life-altering decision that you may come to regret.

A Microsoft survey of 30,000 employees worldwide found that 41% are thinking of leaving their job this year. In the United States, four million people resigned from their jobs in April 2021 alone. Yet quitting a job comes with risks, including not finding anything suitable in an unpredictable economic environment. The decision must be well thought-through. Start by determining whether your impulse to quit your job is due to pandemic-related languishing or because of an untenable work situation. If it’s the latter, and you feel your health is suffering due to workplace bullying or chronic overwork, quitting may be the best option. Before you do so, however, take 10 days to write down your feelings about your job to determine the exact cause of your frustrations.
