When Shellye Archambeau started her career, she found it more effective to aim two or three levels above her current position instead of telling people she wanted to become a CEO. Expressing her ambition in terms of more reachable mid-term goals made it easier for Archambeau to find the support she needed to keep climbing.

However, top leaders must step up to make sure that women of color gain promotion at the same rates as their white male colleagues.
