Reproductive rights cause controversy almost anywhere in the world, and China is no exception. In China, single women don’t have access to assisted reproductive technologies such as egg freezing and surrogacy. But as they earn higher salaries and become better-educated, China’s single ladies won’t take no for an answer. Instead, more and more women travel abroad to freeze their eggs or look for surrogates. China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission barred single women’s access to assisted reproductive technology (ART) in 2003. When the one-child policy ended in 2015, many people believed the government would ease up ART regulations as well. Instead, the Ministry of Health repeated that, to be eligible for egg freezing, a woman had to present valid identification, a marriage certificate and a government issued birth permit.
