Recommendation

Speaker and writer Zig Ziglar makes the most of being endearingly cornball. He straightforwardly writes, “I plead guilty to loving the Lord, my wife, my family [and] my fellow man.” He proudly wears his heart on his sleeve, dedicating this book to his beloved spouse of more than half a century, “Sugar Baby.” He is sentimental to the extreme, writing across from the title page: “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” Well, people obviously love Ziglar’s schmaltzy wisdom. For almost four decades, he has been a hugely popular motivational speaker and writer. This book, a classic from 1975, has been published in 12 languages, including Korean, Serbian, Turkish and Slovenian. Unlike many motivational, self-help authors who serve up insipid clichés and warmed-over mush, Ziglar offers worthy, inspiring – if simplistic – ideas on improving your life and achieving your goals. Some of his message stems from his cited Christian beliefs, but his focus is on boosting your morale, not your morals. getAbstract thinks he’ll make you feel good about yourself, the people around you and life in general, if you can just accept that corniness is part of the package.

Summary

Climbing the Stairway

Do you believe in yourself firmly and fully? You cannot realize your dreams if you do not. But if you trust your ability to reach your goals, nothing can stop you. Climb six crucial steps to get what you want from life:

  1. Cultivate a positive self-image.
  2. See others as worthwhile.
  3. Establish firm goals.
  4. Develop a good mental attitude.
  5. Invest the proper amount of time and effort to achieve what you want.
  6. Be sure you truly desire to get ahead.

You may think these six steps sound awfully basic and that you still don’t have what it takes to get ahead. This is “stinkin thinkin.” A bar of gold and a penny have the same value if they lie buried at the bottom of the ocean – nothing. In fact, you have truly unlimited potential. However, you must bring that potential to the surface to realize its value. Many people do not try to make that effort. Instead, they make excuses. Is that your problem? Do you complain that you had lousy parents? That you are too heavy, or too old, or too young? That you are bald? That you were born in the wrong...

To be honest, it's a little preachy but I definitely liked the message.

"We build our character from the bricks of habit we pile up day by day."

    RIP Zig Zigler.

This book is a double sided gem. One side of the summary is it's seductively simple, familiar, and basic that misleads to believe me it's teachings won't work.

The other side of this gem are powerful truths. While reading this summary, I took the perspective of learning these truths for the first time with well deserved reverance to the gifted oracle of self improvement, Zig Ziglar.
